WARNING: SOME SPOILERS CONTAINED WITHIN! As I sit here watching the new season 4 of Sherlock, The Abominable Bride, it is bringing back great memories of my trip to London in the summer of 2013. I had gone to London for a study abroad course in my Curriculum and Instruction Masters program. Thankfully, in between our “experiences” we were able to have a little fun! We had a number of Sherlock fans among our group, not just of the BBC series but of the books as well. In our free time, we made for 221B Baker Street, located in the Marleybone district of London, and the home of the fictional detective Sherlock Holmes! Not only is it a film site for the television series, but it also a museum of 19th century detective work, much like Holmes would have participated in.
If you are a fan then this is simply a must see when in London. We got off at the Baker Street tube station, which was under construction at the time, so we had to take a sort of wonky way to get out of the train station, and finally reached the street level. Down the street you could immediately tell 221B Baker from the bobby (police officer) standing outside.
Inside, this historic building had been converted into a museum of 19th century detective work, including many of the tools Sherlock Holmes would have used this. We played with the pipes and spy glasses, engrossing ourselves in the world created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Now that Sherlock has returned for its 4th season, and for the first time in the series it is being brought back to the 19th century, we can finally see answers to our questions about Moriarty’s death. This haunting episode about a murderous ghost bride ties the supernatural with Moriarty’s return. Is Moriarty dead? Andrew Scott is back as the sadistic Moriarty, while Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are fantastic as ever as the Holmes and Watson duo. Holmes goes back into his mind palace to a 100 year old case in order to help him explain how Moriarty could have survived shooting himself in the head. I am excited to see the rest of the season unfold, and of course, to get back to London!
